Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but the work doesn't stop when you leave the studio. Proper aftercare is the single most important thing you can do to make sure your tattoo heals beautifully and stays vibrant for years to come. Here at Costello Tattoo & Piercing Studio, we've put together this comprehensive guide so you know exactly what to do.
The First 24 Hours
Your artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a bandage or wrap. Leave this on for the time your artist recommends — typically 2 to 4 hours. When it's time to remove it, wash your hands thoroughly first, then gently remove the bandage.
Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel — never rub, and avoid using cloth towels that can harbor bacteria. Apply a thin layer of the aftercare ointment your artist recommended.
Days 2–7: The Healing Phase
During the first week, your tattoo will start to peel and flake — this is completely normal. Resist the urge to pick or scratch at it. Continue washing 2-3 times daily and applying a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or aftercare balm.
Wash gently 2-3 times per day with fragrance-free soap
Apply a thin layer of moisturizer after each wash
Avoid submerging in water — no pools, hot tubs, or baths
Keep it out of direct sunlight
Wear loose, breathable clothing over the area
Weeks 2–4: Almost There
By the second week, most of the peeling should be done. Your tattoo might look a bit dull or cloudy — don't worry, this is normal. The outer layers of skin are still healing. Continue moisturizing regularly and protecting from the sun.
Long-Term Tattoo Care
Once healed, your tattoo still needs love. Sun exposure is the number one enemy of tattoo longevity. Always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen over your tattoos when spending time outdoors. Keep your skin moisturized, stay hydrated, and your ink will stay bold and beautiful.
When to Contact Your Artist
While some redness, swelling, and peeling are normal, watch for signs of infection: excessive redness spreading beyond the tattoo, pus or unusual discharge, fever, or severe pain that gets worse instead of better. If you notice any of these, contact your artist or a healthcare provider.
Book Your Touch-Up
Some tattoos need a touch-up after healing, and that's perfectly normal. At Costello Tattoo & Piercing Studio, we offer touch-up sessions within 3 months of your original appointment. Book your touch-up online — it's quick and easy.
